What is voltage?
by uclaboyz on Mon 03/27/2006 04:09 PM

Voltage, resistance, and current are the most basic terms in the study of electricity.

Voltage, in strict definition, is the "Electromotive force or potential difference, usually expressed in volts."

So what does that mean in layman's term? You can think of voltage as the pressure pushing on a water tank. The greater voltage, more pressure is pushed upon the water contained in the tank. Now, imagine a tube is attached to the bottom of the tank, and that tube flows through a pipe system.

The water/pipe system is analogous to voltage and current in electronics. An electronic circuit consists of a power source (water tank) and wires/conductors (pipe). A higher voltage is like having higher pressured applied in the water tank, thus a higher current (water flow) can be pushed through the circuit.
